Enforcer mesmerizes LA by fire!

Yesterday, was a concert I have waited six years to attend. It was worth it! Enforcer is a band I heard many moons ago. I got this Speed Kills comp and I was blown away by the songs that were from their demo.. Then I remember hearing “Diamonds” (which at the time was a new release) and loving it. I remember when “Death by fire” came and out also last year they released a masterpiece known as “From Beyond”. Also, they put out the epic live record “Live by fire” so Enforcer have the songs to prove they are a force to be reckoned with. So for two days I’ve been pretty much listening to just Enforcer. When the day came it almost didn’t seem like this could be happening. So I headed to LA from Riverside County picked up some friends and dealt with traffic. Before I went into the venue I met the bassist Tobias and he signed my merch which was really cool of him. When I got into the venue Exmortus was playing and I heard them play a couple of songs. They are very talented musicians and also are great at playing solos not bad but it didn’t totally click with me.
Picture

Enforcer set up really quick no more than 15 minutes after Exmortus. During that time I made it to the front row. Then they started off the mayhem with“Destroyer” and it was amazing. It sounded so good the whole crowd went insane at that point. Just headbanging and fistbanging. I think a pit broke out. But I really couldn’t tell because everyone was moving and being pushed. When they played “Undying Evil” the whole crowd was singing along and you could feel the speed and power! “Mesmerized by Fire” just kept this heavy metal machine rolling and blowing away the crowd. Olof said "We are Enforcer from Sweden! We are here to break your necks and crack your skulls" They more than accomplished their task and I was enjoying every second of it! Enforcer was just totally kicking our ass. “From Beyond” slowed down the pace a bit. But people were singing along and the energy was electric. It was infectious actually. They also played “Scream of the Savage” and “Take me out of this nightmare” which are fan favorites. “Below the Slumber” is really amazing live. It starts off a lot slower but breaks into just neckbreaking riffs..

Then they came back for an encore and played one of their best songs… “Katana”!!!!!! I can’t get enough of that songs the vocal lines the guitar solos. Then they played “Run for your life” and ended off the concert with “Midnight Vice”. It was just an amazing set. After the set I was able to meet Olof and he signed my merch and I got a picture with him. I also met Joseph Tholl and I think he was shocked I had some Black Trip albums for him to sign he was cool and signed my stuff and I got a picture with him. I really hope they come back soon because they totally kicked my ass and I think this may be the best show of the year! I left a little bit after the headliner started playing because my ride had to go to work the next day so I can’t comment on the headliner. However, you can catch Enforcer on the rest of the tour! DON’T MISS IT!

Hirax revives the spirit of Fenders Ballroom

Hirax really needs no introduction they are a classic band from Southern California. Blowing up our eardrums with their latest album Immortal Legacy. Which is probably one of the best thrash records in recent times. They played at the Jesse Pitando tribute show which I sadly missed but this time I was not going to miss this show. I saw them once a couple years ago at the Observatory in Santa Ana and it was a ripper so I expected nothing less. Fenders ballroom was a venue that many bands played at in Long Beach some of those bands were Dark Angel, Possessed, Voivod, GBH, Final Conflict, Circle Jerks had played here. Also, some bands that would become huge like Guns N’ Roses and No Doubt.. So if Hirax was going to revisit "Fenders ballroom" I was really excited to see the chaos that Hirax would bring with it.
Picture
When I got to the venue Heretic were at the end of their set but I did catch 3 songs and I really liked what I heard. I hope to catch them again soon because they were really good. After Heretic I was able to make my way to the front where I waited for Hirax. The intro tape came on and then the band started the instrumental “1,000 Strong”. Then Katon came on stage and then the mayhem ensued when they started “Hellion Rising”. In front you had people headbanging and fistbanging and even in this small venue you had a pit going. People were ready for this onslaught of metal. Then they burst into “Baptized by fire” and the crowd went even crazier. “Lucifer’s Inferno” is one of my favorite Hirax songs and right when this song started the stage diving started. I made sure I didn’t get kicked in the face or anything and I kept a safe distance. Katon always reminded me of like Bruce Dickinson when it comes to stage energy like running around but he also had a total punk attitude about it too. Really, a unique frontman in metal for sure. I was really glad to hear “La boca de la Bestia (mouth of the beast)” Another favorite Hirax song of mine. The Harrison brothers killed it! The guitar and bass sounded fantastic. They are just really good musicians and songwriters, they are bad ass!
Picture
The show got pretty crazy to the point where I saw one guy bleeding from his forehead. Katon after the one of the songs kinda told people to chill out and remember we’re all here to have a good time and we’re all metal brothers and sisters and let’s be cool. Which I thought was cool of him to do. “Hostile Territory” ripped your neck in half it sounded so good. “El Diablo Negro” was amazing live the Harrison brothers during one part of the song had a bit of a pit themselves it was really epic. They ended their set with “Bombs of death” which I think they have too. I think that’s their Angel of Death or Peace Sells you know you got to end the set with that song. After the show I was able to get my records signed by Katon, Lance, and Steve Harrison. All really cool guys. This probably has to go be one of the craziest shows I’ve been to in a while. Hirax successful resurrected the spirit of Fenders Ballroom.

Show your Scars fest review

I have been really excited to go to this show for months. However, I had to wait until a few weeks before this show to buy the tickets. I'm glad I didn't wait another week because once it got announced it was all ages this show sold out very quick. I arrived at the show at least an hour before it started. The doors opened around 3:00 PM. I met a couple of friends there which was really cool.
First band up was Skeletal Remains. They are a death metal band from LA. In the vein of the old school death metal bands. They recently put out a new album and they played quite a few songs from it and it was an awesome performance. They were tight and heavy. I had seen them once before and they were awesome so it was really good to finally see them again. I really hope to see Skeletal Remains again because they are one of the best bands from LA. The next band up was Nervosa from Brazil. I remember when they came out a couple of years ago but I haven't overall heard much of their material. A friend and I walked out of the venue before Nervosa’s set to get a drink. When we came back they had already started their set. But I think they had just started because when I saw em they played at least 4 songs I know they played the song “Death”. I was actually surprised by how good their energy was. They seemed really happy to be here playing. I would definitely want to see them again. They kick off their U.S tour in February. Crematorium was up next and I heard one song and it wasn't my style so I went outside to talk to friends and wait for Night Demon.

*blurry pic of Nervosa
Night Demon is one of my favorite bands of all time. I listen to Curse of the damned easily at least once a week. I have seen them many times before but in 2015 I only got to see them once due to all the shows being 21+. So being able to see them now waiting almost a year I was really excited. So I made sure to get to the front for Night Demon. They set up and the intro kicked on and then they burst into “Screams in the night” and the crowd just got this huge burst of energy. I was told by some friends that people were moshing to Night Demon which I did not expect since to me they are more of headbanging/fistbanging band and I’ve only seen a pit open up maybe once or twice for them. But maybe that just shows that they have just as much energy as their counterparts on this line up. They played “Heavy Metal Heat”, “Ritual” and “The Chalice”. Also, Rocky came out during that song which is the only the second time I’ve seen that, so that was kick ass. So Night Demon as usual kicked major ass I may be biased but they were my favorite band of the night. Hail the Night Demon!

Picture
Gravehill is a death metal band from Anaheim. I have been told they are really good live. But that was with their first singer and now they have a new one, so I didn't really know what to expect. The first couple of songs the sound was messed up and it was all kick and bass. But after that they were able to fix it and the guitars finally were more audible. Once that happened you were really to fully experience the band live. They were really good and I would hope to see them again soon. At the end of their set they played “Eat the Rich” as a tribute to Lemmy, and it sounded really good.
A band I love seeing live is Ghoul. The first time I saw them was many years ago at Thrasho De Mayo and then once again last year. They have a really fun live show. Once the music started the (fake) blood started spraying from the stage. The pit broke out and people were thrashing all around. They played one of my favorite songs “We came for the dead” also “Spill your guts” where the crowd went crazy with. I was glad to hear “Destructor” as well. Ghoul is always tight and they have some funny stage banter. At the end of their set they played “Ace of Spades”. Ghoul as usual delivers a bloody, thrashy set. Terrorizer played their album “World Downfall” in full. They blazed through the set in usual grindcore fashion. Playing classics like “Fear of Napalm” and “Corporation Pull-in”. There was some stage diving for Ghoul but a lot of people really started stage diving during Terrorizer. Terrorizer’s set felt really quick. I know their album isn’t that long but it felt no longer than 20 minutes. This is my second time seeing em and it was good.
Picture
Repulsion – Horrified was one of the first Grindcore albums I have ever heard. I have always wanted to see Repulsion but until now I haven’t been able to. Live the guitar tone for Repulsion was very beefy. I was so glad to finally hear songs like “Radiation Sickness” and “Black Breath” after all these years. They said “Since, it’s been 30 years since Horrified was released were going to play the whole album” So they blasted your ears and you were Horrified (in a good way) by their set. They played “The Hammer” which was pretty cool. So finally after all these years I got to see the grind legends REPULSION! Within at least 15 minutes Municipal Waste was already setting up and getting ready to play. Now, I’ve been at the show since 2 a-clock and the venue floor is not leveled it was at an angle and at the back was a steeper angle and closer to the stage was leveled. During the last bands I was standing more in the back and having to stand through all these bands I have to admit I was tired. So I saw a couple of Municipal Waste songs. I really wanted to hear “The Thing” and then after that I went home. So I can’t really comment on what happened during the show for them. Overall this was a really good show with a lot of good bands.
P.S sorry for the low quality pics these were taken from my phone.

Kadavar/ The Shrine/ All them witches at the El REy Theatre

Picture
So last week I received a message from Metal Assault that I had won the contest to the Kadavar/The Shrine/All Them Witches show. I was really happy and a big thank you to Andrew from Metal Assault. He’s a really cool dude and I hope one day to hang with him outside of a concert area since you can’t hear anything with the music playing waiting for the bands to get set up.

So I showed up around 8:20 I believe and All Them Witches were already playing. I don’t know if I caught them in the middle of their set or a few songs in. They are probably the most experimental out of all the bands. It was interesting to see how the bassist played and how the band really worked together in a collective of sound. There wasn’t really one instrument taking the spotlight at any time more of them just working together in the whole song if that makes any sense. Their music isn’t really my cup of tea but I can totally respect them on the musicianship and the creativity behind their music.

Picture
The Shrine I had seen a while ago. The last time I saw them they were opening for Hirax. They started off the set with “Tripping Corpse” which is a great song and a strong way to open up the set. The singer said “This is for the metalheads, hippies, acid worshipers, and punks”. That’s in a sense how you can sum up how the Shrine sounds. To me they are just primitive in your face rock n’ roll. They played this really awesome song called “Warship” that I think is freaking awesome. They had a really good live energy and a punk attitude another song that was really cool was “Acid Drop” the whole set was really good. I hope to see them live again. I was able to pick up a 7” from their merch booth which I will spin soon.  I totally recommend checking this band out.

The German rockers Kadavar are back in the U.S. I missed my chance of seeing them at the show they played with Pentagram in Santa Ana a few years back and was really disappointed that I couldn’t see them. I was really excited that I won these tickets so I could be able to see them. They had this really cool intro tape that could be from a movie or maybe even like an old radio program from back in the day either way it was really cool. Right when they came out they just started to rock this venue. The instruments just sounded so good the guitar tone was just really good. I was just really impressed by the whole performance of the band it sounded really tight. The drummer had a really cool see through drum kit. The lights really did add to the whole performance of the band it just looked really cool. They played some songs of their new album Berlin which I was able to pick up a copy at the show and it’s really good. They played “The Old Man” which is one of my favorites off the new album and also "Last Living Dinosaur" and many other good songs.  The crowd received them quite well. I heard Abra Kadavar a few years ago but now I will have to pick up a copy of it sometime soon. Also, I must say Kadavar is really good live band and if you can see them you will not be disappointed!

Savage Master and BAT bring the Ripper and Total Wreckage to LA

I was very glad to see that BAT and Savage Master would be playing this show. Since I wouldn’t be able to attend the other shows they would be playing in California. So before going to the venue I hit up a record store and store mixed with CD’s and movies kinda like FYE. So I found a cheap CD there then headed to the venue. I actually didn’t really watch the opening bands due to I was talking with a friend and I was just waiting for BAT and Savage Master. So once BAT was starting to get ready I went into the venue hall. While I was waiting I started to talk to Brandon the bassist of Savage Master and he was really cool to talk to. Then BAT came on and everyone got into it they kicked it off with Code Rude and the mayhem begun. I was standing in the front row headbanging then I get pushed onto the stage. There was this one guy who was being the cliché “mosh pit douchebag” so me and multiple other people had to deal with him for the rest of the BAT set. They played some new songs one of my favorites was “Wings of Chains” which I thought was a damn good song. They also played a Venom cover. That song being “Live like an angel, die like a devil”. I was really excited to hear “Cruel Discipline” which is from their latest 7” and it totally rules. The whole set was filled with a great performance by BAT and some Ryan Waste humor. They ended it with the song "BAT". It was a great way to end a great set. I hope to see them again.
Picture
Once BAT was done they started to get the stage ready for Savage Master. I had heard a few songs and I was interested in seeing them. But overall I didn’t know really what to expect. So the band came out and it was like a minute of eire guitar reverb and then Stacie comes out and they start with the “Ripper in Black” and man they just started to rip. It was really, really good. Another really good song was “Mask of the devil” I really liked the crazy vocal style during parts of that song.  At one point during the set the singer whipped the bassist. I don’t know of that’s usually part of their live performance but at least this time it was. The whole band was tight and they gave it a 100% and I really hope to see them again. At one point the singer came out into the crowd which was really cool. They ended the set with “Swords and Tequilla”. After the show had ended I talk to Ryan for a bit got some stuff signed. I was really hoping to pick up a CD or a Vinyl from Savage Master but they told me they had sold out.  So I guess I’ll have to track down a copy online. So this was a really good show one of the best shows of the year in my opinion. I am glad I got to see these two great bands.

Blade Killer and Vanlade bring metal to Pomona

9/21/2015

So I didn’t expect to go this show at all. A few weeks before when this show was confirmed it was 21+ and I’m sadly underage so I didn’t expect to go at all. Then I saw on Instagram that it was all ages. So I was very excited. Blade Killer is always a very good band live and I always enjoy seeing them very much. I have never seen Vanlade live. Actually Vic from Vindicator got me into them. The first band playing was Mutants of War. This a thrash metal outfit from Chino, California. They wear they’re influences on their sleeves of just bringing old school thrash. They’re wasn’t too many people at the location at the moment. There wasn’t any moshing either because the “venue” was a clothing store. Which shocked me to be honest. I didn’t expect that at all. But the sound wasn’t bad or anything it was pretty good for what it was. So when they we’re done I just hung out outside then when I went back in and Vanlade we’re setting up.

The singer of Vanlade came in with a fringed Leather jacket and cowboy boots and aviator glasses. Now, people might think these guys are just hard rock but no they bring some great heavy metal from Kansas.  I contributed to their Kickstarter and got my CD earlier this week. They sounded really good. There was a bit of mic issues but they handled it and the show went on. I was really glad they played the song “Hail the Protector”. Since it’s one of my favorites off the new album. They also played a cool cover of “Kansas – Carry on wayward son” and I must say it sounded damn good. They also finished their set with “Blood Eagle”. So they had a pretty strong set list and they sounded great. I would suggest to anybody that if you can see them live.

Picture
Next band up was Blade Killer from Los Angeles. I have seen them multiple times however it’s been quite a while so I was itching to see them live again. They got set up pretty quick and people were quite excited to see them. They played with a lot of energy and the crowd was eating it up. “Raise your fist” is a song that got people fistbanging and headbanging (obviously). They played one of my favorite songs from them being “Lost Angels” I think it totally deserves the 7” vinyl treatment in my opinion. They played a new song “Midnight Sinner” which was really good as well. All the songs Blade Killer played we’re excellent. They also played a Judas Priest and an Iron Maiden cover. The crowd ate that up. So once again the band kicked major ass and I hope to see them live again because it’s always a good time. Hopefully, we can expect a new album because it would be great to see them playing a headlining set soon.

This was a very fun gig. I did not expect it to be in a clothing store but it all worked out and I think the fans and the bands all had a good time. Vanlade is playing the Viper room in LA tonight so I suggest going. Blade Killer is confirmed on the Frost and Fire Fest in Ventura so get your ticket while you can. I was not able to see Witchaven due to time constraints.  Still If you can see Blade Killer and Vanlade live do it you will not be disappointed!

Born For Burning IV Death Metal edition!

8/9/2015

Picture
Last night was the first time I have been to The Black Castle. It was for a really cool monthly show called Born for Burning put on by Painkiller Kim and Muerto En La Cruz. The doors were supposed to open at 8PM. However, one of the bands Abscission got into a car accident and they were not able to make the show. So I got to the venue around 8:45 and I was talking with friends outside around 9:00 I finally did go inside the venue. I did get some cool stuff from Inferno metal distro and there was some other vendors which had some other items for sale. In the “catacombs” of the Black Castle is where they have the DJ’s and then behind the venue is small porch where they had food and drinks. I actually met Alvaro from Unholy Lust and got to talk to him for a few minutes. Then around 9:45-10:00 the first band Sakrificer went on. I saw this band many years ago. At the last Thrasho De Mayo. So it’s been a long time and they exceeded my expectations for sure. They came out and just busted out each song with their ripping deaththrash attack. They were very well received by the crowd. With people headbanging, moshing, and stage divers. They sound like Schizophrenia era Sepultura with Slayer so fast and intense thrash metal. I wasn’t too familiar with their material but definitely a band worth seeing again.

Picture
Picture
The next band Morfin was up. This band is very much influenced by the 90’s Floridian death metal. I only caught a few songs because I was talking to friends I hadn’t seen a while outside. But the band was solid and if you see them on a bill you should check em out given the chance to. Then the headliner Skeletal Remains!! So they set up pretty quick and started they’re set. To be very truthful I really like their first album but I don’t own a copy so I couldn’t tell you the song titles. This is my first time seeing them. Man, this band for sure is due for a repeat violation of my ears. The guitar tone sounded great. Really the whole sound of the band was good. Chris Monroy vocals sounded killer and the riffs we’re killer. The vocals obviously have a Martin Van Drunen  feel to them. Which I’m not complaining since I’m a big fan of Hail Of Bullets plus Pestilence and Asphyx rule! So no complaints from me. You can tell Pestilence is a big influence but Skeletal Remains has their own sound. Their set was really good it was high energy and kept the intensity throughout the set. If you like old school death metal Skeletal remains is a great band to see from LA. I’m looking forward one day to see them again because they ruled live. At the end they played a Pestilence cover.

Picture
At the end of the show I walked around for a few minutes and checked what the DJ was spinning. Then I looked at the time and it was already time for me to get going. I totally spaced out and forgot to buy the Skeletal Remains CD (Idiot!). However, before I left I talked to my friend for a few minutes and the guitarist of Sakrificer which turned into a conversation about metal from South America and Mexico which was pretty cool. In the end Born For Burning was a very good experience and something I would definitely want to go to again!

Terrorizer LA live @Los Globos

6/28/2015

So today was my first time seeing Terrorizer LA. This version features original vocalist/songwriter Oscar Garcia. So this was a concert I was looking forward to for a while. I have never been to a grindcore concert or seen a grindcore band live. I finally showed up at Los Globos around 7:45 pm. The band before that had ended I didn’t really see them I only heard them while waiting in line. Right when they were supposed to go one at 8:15 Terrorizer starts their assault on LA. They started off with "After World Obliteration" which was pretty awesome. When they played "Fear of Napalm" the audience went absolutely nuts. "Corporation Pull-In" was another song that had a great crowd response. Really it sounded great. Then they played one of my favorite songs "Strategic Warheads".

The whole band sounded really tight. Oscar’s vocals sounded just as good as they did on the album. The guitars, bass, and drum all sounded great. Terrorizer LA just plays material from World Downfall. However, they did play a song that was featured on Before The Downfall. They played the song "Collapse". Wow, this song really kicked ass. Oscar said that this is the first time they have ever had played this song live. So it’s cool that I got to see that. They are heading to Europe so if you are in Europe go see them!

I was not able to see the last band that played being Capitalist Causalities. However, finally being able to see Terrorizer LA was a great experience. I’m looking forward one day to see them live again.

In the night/early morning hours into Saturday Girlschool came back to the whiskey a go go after 32 years! Let's just say I never would have thought I would ever see Girlschool unless I made it to a festival in Europe. Obviously I was wrong and they came here to teach LA how to rock.

I got to the venue around 11:45 because I was told beforehand Girlschool was going to go on at midnight. When I got there the opening band Crucified Barbara was still playing but I only caught a few songs from their set. Then around 12:45 Girlschool comes on. And wow they open up with "hit and run". The crowd went nuts. Then the next song my favorite "C'mon lets go" sounded amazing live. They sounded really tight. From the live videos I have seen before hands they still/did bring the goods live.

Mid set they played three new songs from a new ep they said they are releasing called "Propaganda" I don't know if these songs are going to be on the new album. However, I enjoyed em.
They ended off on classic tracks being Yeah right and Emergency. Really, they sound great and I thought they were really tight. I can only imagine how they were back in 1982. Catch em on their last remained tour dates you will not be disappointed.

Visigoth take no prisoners at the Riff Haus 4/25/15

Picture
So I’ve been looking forward to this concert for a while. I have seen Night Demon many times at the Riff Haus and a lot of other bands. So a lot of good times at this venue. However, today was different. It was dark, cold, and gloomy. The mammoth riders from Utah were coming to Fullerton. They were pounding at the gates. Ready to launch their heavy metal assault on all the people at the show. There was quite a few local openers. Concrete Sledge, Darkcult, Novareign and quite a few others.

I should have kept track of the time but around 7:40 Darkcult went on. I have bought tickets from these guys before but I’ve never seen em play so I went into this not knowing what to expect. So the intro was actually the same intro but just longer that Night Demon uses for the chalice. Maybe a bit of a nod? Either way, once the band started they were ripping. To me I heard a bit more black/thrash with traditional metal elements thrown in there for good measuer. It did remind of Nocturnal at times. I really dug their set. The guitarist Alan is pretty cool guy. So if you can check em out live I would. It’s cool to see a band with their style rising from the OC area. I definitely think there is potential for this band in the future, hopefully a full length.

The next band up was Concrete Sledge. Now, with that name I obviously expected pure Pantera worship, however this is not what the band delivered. It was metal but there was definitely a proggy element and feel to them. I would have to say out of all the bands they felt the most “modern”. I liked em though. It’s different, but if you’re expecting to them to bust into a cowboys from hell 2.0 that’s not what you’re going to get.

After this band I was hanging out outside, then I did an interview with Visigoth. Once that was done I saw the last few songs of Novareign which are a power metal band more in the vein of the European power metal than any U.S power metal. However, they are more progressive power metal rather than like Hammerfall meat and potatoes type of power metal. I don’t know why but like if Helloween keeper of the seven keys era got more technical that’s what they remind me of. I think they are pretty good and I’ll try to keep up on this band because they are fun to see live that’s for sure.

Last band up was Visigoth. They have already stormed the gates of San Diego and left it in ruin. They plundered LA yesterday. The campaign continues to Fullerton. Like I stated before I conducted an interview with them. They were all really cool guys. The singer and I actually talked a bit about obscure bands. You know metal nerd stuff. HAHA! OK, so I had high expectations since watching live videos they seemed epic and my friend told me that he went to the LA show and they were epic. Now, they got on stage at around 10 – 10:30 I wanna say? So, the band starts and wow. They were just awesome. The singer Jake reminded me of Katon from Hirax of his stage presence. This guy knows how to just command the stage. Like if he had a sword on stage it would be pretty sweet. They started off with Mammoth rider and the whole crowd was into it headbanging and fist banging. Then they played Dungeon Master which was really awesome. They played a new track “Salt city living” that definitely has a rocking riff that gets your foot tapping and your body moving and it was instantly catchy. The next song was “The Revenant King” which was an absolutely amazing song live. The whole band was tight throughout the whole set. The guitars sounded great the solos were executed really well.
During the song “Iron Brotherhood” the singer Jake jumped into the crowd and grabbed me to sing the part “we are the iron brotherhood” which caught me off guard because that hasn’t happened to me but it was cool. Also, a mosh pit broke out a few times during the set which was different but cool. So in the end it was an awesome show. I suggest you see Visigoth on this tour and support the band because they rule live. It was a night of a lot of fist banging and head banging and metal brotherhood the quintessential metal show.
