Last night was the first time I have been to The Black Castle. It was for a really cool monthly show called Born for Burning put on by Painkiller Kim and Muerto En La Cruz. The doors were supposed to open at 8PM. However, one of the bands Abscission got into a car accident and they were not able to make the show. So I got to the venue around 8:45 and I was talking with friends outside around 9:00 I finally did go inside the venue. I did get some cool stuff from Inferno metal distro and there was some other vendors which had some other items for sale. In the “catacombs” of the Black Castle is where they have the DJ’s and then behind the venue is small porch where they had food and drinks. I actually met Alvaro from Unholy Lust and got to talk to him for a few minutes. Then around 9:45-10:00 the first band Sakrificer went on. I saw this band many years ago. At the last Thrasho De Mayo. So it’s been a long time and they exceeded my expectations for sure. They came out and just busted out each song with their ripping deaththrash attack. They were very well received by the crowd. With people headbanging, moshing, and stage divers. They sound like Schizophrenia era Sepultura with Slayer so fast and intense thrash metal. I wasn’t too familiar with their material but definitely a band worth seeing again.
The next band Morfin was up. This band is very much influenced by the 90’s Floridian death metal. I only caught a few songs because I was talking to friends I hadn’t seen a while outside. But the band was solid and if you see them on a bill you should check em out given the chance to. Then the headliner Skeletal Remains!! So they set up pretty quick and started they’re set. To be very truthful I really like their first album but I don’t own a copy so I couldn’t tell you the song titles. This is my first time seeing them. Man, this band for sure is due for a repeat violation of my ears. The guitar tone sounded great. Really the whole sound of the band was good. Chris Monroy vocals sounded killer and the riffs we’re killer. The vocals obviously have a Martin Van Drunen feel to them. Which I’m not complaining since I’m a big fan of Hail Of Bullets plus Pestilence and Asphyx rule! So no complaints from me. You can tell Pestilence is a big influence but Skeletal Remains has their own sound. Their set was really good it was high energy and kept the intensity throughout the set. If you like old school death metal Skeletal remains is a great band to see from LA. I’m looking forward one day to see them again because they ruled live. At the end they played a Pestilence cover.
At the end of the show I walked around for a few minutes and checked what the DJ was spinning. Then I looked at the time and it was already time for me to get going. I totally spaced out and forgot to buy the Skeletal Remains CD (Idiot!). However, before I left I talked to my friend for a few minutes and the guitarist of Sakrificer which turned into a conversation about metal from South America and Mexico which was pretty cool. In the end Born For Burning was a very good experience and something I would definitely want to go to again!
